The concept behind TheraGlio is to develop a multimodal imaging system for the theranostics (therapy + diagnosis) of patients with malignant glioma, the most common primary brain tumor. This technology utilizes a new generation of microbubbles (Microbubbles – MBs) that can function simultaneously as both a drug delivery system and a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging, intraoperative ultrasound, and intraoperative microscopic fluorescence studies.
This innovative imaging system guides the operator during the procedure, helping to improve patient safety and survival. The use of TheraGlio enables wider and safer tumor resection, as well as more precise administration of chemotherapeutic drugs. The project received funding from the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme from 2013 to 2018. Coordinator: Francesco DiMeco, MD.
